Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO)

Ankle foot orthoses are often referred to as AFOs, ankle splints or a lower leg orthosis. An AFO is used to support and control the foot and ankle, by using materials, such as thermoplastics and carbon fibre, and mechanical joints. The benefits provided by orthotic joints are clinically significant and AFOs are often prescribed to help improve impaired ankle joint function. AFOs can be particularly beneficial in those people who have developed foot drop, which can occur following a stroke.

At BPO our clinicians work together with our technicians to design and create your bespoke AFO prescription at our manufacturing site in Huddersfield.

Knee Ankle Orthosis (KAFO)

A knee ankle foot orthosis helps support and control foot, ankle and knee motion and extends above the knee onto the thigh. KAFOs are often prescribed to control movement for people who have reduced mobility due to conditions like polio and cerebral palsy.

KAFO’s are divided into different classifications depending on the intended function at the knee joint, these are often referred to as ‘free’, ‘locked’ and ‘automatic’ KAFO knee joints. The materials and joints of the KAFO are always selected according to the patient’s ability, following a clinical assessment from one of our team.”

Carbon Fibre Orthotics

At BPO we specialise in carbon fibre orthoses, using the latest technologies in lamination for both KAFOs and AFOs.
Our carbon fibre orthoses are fabricated using advanced techniques, to suit each patient’s individual needs. This can include componentry ranging from bale locks to the latest electronically controlled knee joints.

Our clinicians and technicians combine their skills to create a bespoke product by specific alignment of the carbon fibre at key structural points on the orthosis. This ensures that the finished orthosis will remain lightweight, whilst retaining its durability.
